Filfla included in the Animasyros Animation Festival

Filfla was selected by the Animasyros Animation Festival programme team to be included in this year’s Festival tribute to animation in the Mediterranean region.

The Animasyros International Animation Festival was launched in 2008 in the island of Syros in Greece. Since then, Animasyros takes place annually in the capital of the Cyclades complex. This year’s edition of the festival, Animasyros  2021, takes place on 22-26 September 2021.

Animasyros Festival is organized into three main pillars, the artistic programme, the educational programmes and the Market section.

Filfla is an award winning short animation by Fabrizio Ellul released in 2019. Done in an illustration/comic style inspired from the cell animation tradition, Filfla is a self-funded project. It is not funded by government funds, grants or private sponsorship.

‘Filfla’ follows the story of a woman who goes to look for a boy on the mystical island of Filfla, where a terrifying creature is lurking in its midst. The short animation explores Maltese myth and folk in a story of love, grief, perseverance and hope.

Filfla won the Kinemastik International Short Film Festival Audience Award in 2019 and was selected in other international film festivals.

Filfla was followed up by Mr Teddy is Angry – a short animation- which is currently in the film festival season and ‘Sarangu – a Maltese Folktale’ – an upcoming graphic novel scheduled for 2022.
